Should the Bible Be Rescued From Fundamentalism?

Mars Hill Forum #5, 21 January 1994, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut
Biship John Spong
Bishop Spong's Website

The guest of the forum was the Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey, the Right Rev. John Shelby Spong. The title was taken from the Bishop's book, Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, in which he criticizes many Christians for their conservative theology. The Bishop's questions for John Rankin were these:

1. Why do evangelical Christians use the Bible as a weapon of oppression?
2. Why do they give the Bible an ultimacy that belongs to God alone?
3. Why do they violate Scripture by judging others different from themselves?
4. Why retain ancient beliefs when modern knowledge has rendered them obsolete?

An audio tape of the forum is available from Christianity for the Third Millennium under the title, The Bible and Its Meaning for Society.
