The guest of the forum was the Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey, the Right Rev. John Shelby Spong. The title was taken from the Bishop's book, Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, in which he criticizes many Christians for their conservative theology. The Bishop's questions for John Rankin were these:

1. Why do evangelical Christians use the Bible as a weapon of oppression?
2. Why do they give the Bible an ultimacy that belongs to God alone?
3. Why do they violate Scripture by judging others different from themselves?
4. Why retain ancient beliefs when modern knowledge has rendered them obsolete?
